General News: Welcome to 3rd grade!
Reading: This week in reading, students will review different reading strategies using our summer reading text, The Enormous Crocodile. We will also go over our daily centers, which will include guided reading, word work, read to self, response to reading, and listen to reading. Math: Students will do a walk through of Volume 1 of their math text, and go over the tools utilized in the text. Students will then learn what a tiered assessment is, and complete the first one for Topic 1. Writing: We will review writer's workshop expectations and procedures, and students will complete their first on demand writing piece about a small moment in their lives. We will also review our GUM book for grammar and introduce Worldly Wise to begin the following week. Social Studies: This week, students will review the procedures and routines of our school and classroom community. We will come up with classroom norms together that we will all follow throughout the year. Students will work in groups to read a section of their Social Studies textbook as an introduction. Science: Students will review norms of working in a small group. Students will work together to try to build the tallest tower out of toothpicks and marshmallows.

Reading- Students will continue to read "Because of Winn Dixie." This week they will focus on visualizations as a comprehension strategy. They will create their own picture based on the readings with a descriptive paragraph.
Wordly Wise- Students will be introduced to Lesson 13 words, which include the following: bold, cunning, deed, doze, jagged, positive, respect, responsible, smuggle, version. Writing- This week, students will focus on writing compare and contrast paragraphs. Math- This week, students will continue a short topic that focuses on the multiples of 10. We will review the topic on Thursday, and have a short test on Friday, June 2nd. Social Studies- Students will continue to research their state with partners for their state's project. This week, they will research the historical events and cultural aspects of their state. Science- Students should continue to work on their science fair project at home. **The majority of this project is completed at home.** We will be typing up different portions of the project in class, as well as assembling our boards. This Friday, June 2nd, their results of their experiment are due. On Monday, June 5th, their conclusions are due. Reading- Students will continue to read "Because of Winn Dixie." This week, we will read chapters 7-17. We will continue to discuss the settings and characters as they are introduced throughout the story. Students will complete a tri-fold each week that focuses on different comprehension strategies for the novel.
Wordly Wise- Students will take the Lesson 13 Wordly Wise test on Friday, May 26th. Writing- We will focus on identifying and constructing the aspects of a paragraph this week. That includes the topic sentence, supporting sentences, and closing sentence. Math- We will continue to focus on different skills. This week, students will focus on the following: lines, line segments, and rays; symmetry; 3D shapes, and decimals and percentages. Science- Students should continue to work on their Science Fair projects at home. Experiments should be completed this week. Results and conclusions are due Friday, June 2nd. At school, we will begin typing up the different components of their project and start compiling our boards. Social Studies- Students will begin a final, end of the year state project. In pairs, they chose a state, and they will be researching five components of that state: geography, economy, culture, historical events, and fun facts. Next week, they will research the geography and economy. Reading- We will begin reading our final novel for the year, "Because of Winn Dixie." This week, students will make predictions of the story based on the text features of the book. They will focus on the setting, characters, and narrator's point of view for the first seven chapters.
Wordly Wise- Students will begin Lesson 13 for Wordly Wise. The words this lesson are as follows: calendar, carnival, experience, govern, gulf, haste, nation, scatter, surrender, and thrill. Writing- Students will continue to writing different types of poems. This week we will work on diamonte poems. Math- Monday, students will review Topic 7 and the topic test will be Tuesday, May 16th. We will then focus on mean, median, mode, range, and probability. Science- Students should continue working on their science fair projects at home. We will be checking their progress at school throughout the week. Social Studies- Students will be taking the Chapter 12 test on the West region on Wednesday, May 17th. They will then be introduced to their final state's project for the end of the year. This project will be completed at school. In partners, students will choose a state to research. They will be researching the geographical, economic, cultural, and historical aspects of their states. Reading: Students will continue to explore the aspects of figurative language and poetry. They will read poems that include hyperboles and onomatopoeias. They will then create their own poem with 8-10 lines that include three different elements of poetry.
Wordly Wise: Our Lesson 11 test has been postponed to Monday, May 1st. Students will be introduced to Lesson 12 words on Tuesday. Writing: Students will continue their Young Authors story. Math: Students will complete word problems based on mass and capacity. We will review for their Topic 14 test. The test is on Thursday, May 4th. Social Studies: We will continue our tour of the West. Science: Students will be learning about the survival adaptations of monarchs. Welcome back from Spring Break!
Math: Students will begin topic 15, which focuses on time, mass, and capacity. They will take the Topic 14 pre-test on Monday, and the focus on the rest of this week is time. Students will practice reading time to the minute and understanding elapsed time. Reading: Students will begin exploring figurative language in literature. This week, they will get a general introduction to the different types of figurative language and then focus specifically on similes and metaphors. Wordly Wise: Students will be introduced to Wordly Wise Lesson 11 words. The words include: diagram, frustrate, graduate, prank, primary, risk, stress, urge, vacant, and vigorous. Writing: Our Young Authors unit will begin this week. Students will get to choose to update a completed piece of writing or create a new piece of their choosing. They will refine their chosen piece to turn in as part o the Young Authors presentation. Social Studies: Students will begin exploring the West region of the United States. They will fill a blank map of the states and capitals of the region, and review the vocabulary. Science: We will explore how amphibians in Chicago survive through winter. Math: On Monday, students will complete a review for Topic 16. Tuesday, April 4th, will be their Topic 16 Assessment. Reading: Students will read the next story in the Junior Great Books, "The Ugly Duckling." Students will determine the important information in the story. Students will take a comprehension check on "The Ugly Duckling" on Friday. *There is no Wordly Wise this week* Writing: Students will type and complete their persuasive letters. Social Studies: Students will complete a review for Chapter 10, and take their Chapter 10 test on Wednesday, April 5th. Science: This week, students will explore how turtles in Chicago survive through the winter. General News: ALL of our 204 students did such a wonderful job on their first PARCC round of testing!
Math: We have begun topic 16, which focuses on the perimeter of shapes. This week students will focus on finding the perimeter of a shape, finding an unknown side, and comparing area vs. perimeter. Reading: Students will read the next story in their Junior Great Books, and continue their Daily 3 work in centers. Their next story is called "The Green Man," and it is about a man who decides to live in the forest for a year. Writing: Students will be completing their final drafts of their persuasive letters. Social Studies: Students will continue their Southwest tour. On Friday, the third graders will complete a simulation of settling Oklahoma in three different phases. Science: Students will continue to learn how different animals adapt in the wintertime in Chicago. This week, students will focus on how snakes adapt structurally and behaviorally. General News: This week, we will begin PARCC. Students should make sure they get a good night's rest, eat a healthy breakfast, and get to school on time!
Math: Students will begin Topic 15. Topic 15 is focused on the attributes of two-dimensional shapes, particularly quadrilaterals. Students will learn the characteristics of a quadrilateral, and how some characteristics place shapes into certain categories. Reading: Students will be presenting their Roald Dahl final projects in class. We will also be focusing on their Daily 3 centers. *There is no Wordly Wise this week.* Writing: Students will complete the main body paragraphs of their persuasive letters this week. Science: We will continue on our current unit, which focuses on the behavioral and structural adaptations animals use to survive winter in Chicago. Social Studies: Students will begin the next region, the Southwest. We will complete a map of the Southwest and explore the vocabulary for the region. |
