General News: This Friday, December 1st, is Pajama Day!
Reading: This will be the last week of focusing on theme in various fantasy stories. Students will be able to identify a theme and prove their theme with evidence from the story. Wordly Wise: We will begin Lesson 6. The words include chasm, continent, credit, enable, foul, gust, ordeal, plateau, rig, and schedule. Spelling: The spelling words include the following: Writing: This week, students will complete their first draft of their Realistic Fiction stories. Math: We will complete the Topic 4 lessons this week. We will focus on the patterns of dividing by even or odd numbers, and dividing with 0 & 1. We will then practice all of our multiplication and division facts, and apply them to word problems. Science: We will explore how deer survive through winter in Chicago. Social Studies: We will see how assembly lines helped people build cars faster and more efficiently. We will also create our own Mall of America!

General News: I can't wait to see everyone's awesome costumes on Halloween! We will be having our Halloween party at 2:30 on Tuesday. Please make sure all costumes are appropriate and don't distract from learning!
Reading: This week, we will review identifying main idea and details in a non fiction text, as well as asking and answering questions using evidence. Wordly Wise: Students will have their Wordly Wise Lesson 4 test on Thursday, since there is no school on Friday. The words are as follows: average, border, cocoon, flutter, moisture, nectar, process, span, suitable, and timber. Spelling: This week spelling words include settle, eagle, rattle, saddle, cattle, middle, ripple, turtle, single, pebble. Writing: Students will be finishing up their personal narratives! Math: We will continue to learn our multiplication facts. This week, students will focus on the 3s, 4s, 6s, and 7s. Social Studies: Students will create "suitcases" that explain the contributions of different immigrant groups. Science: We will review force and motion, and students will take a quiz to assess what they've learned on Tuesday, October 31st. Reading: This week, we will be focusing on asking and answering questions from nonfiction texts.
Wordly Wise: The students will be introduced to lesson 4 words. The words include the following: average, border, cocoon, flutter, moisture, nectar, process, span, suitable, and timber. Spelling Words: well, miss, puff, fill, smell, guess, spill, stuff, unless, grill Writing: We will continue editing and completing the final drafts of our personal narratives. Math: This week, students will review Topic 2 and take their assessment on Tuesday, October 24th. They will then begin Topic 3. They will be introduced to Distributive Property and learn the rest of their math facts. Social Studies: This week, students will interview a family that has immigrated to the United States. They will continue their study into one of the countries from which their families have immigrated. Science: Students will be introduced to static electricity. Reading- Students will work on identifying the main idea and supporting details of a non fiction text.
Wordly Wise: Students will take a test on Lesson 3 on Friday, October 20th. The Lesson 3 words include the following: ambition, auction, coast, current, frail, intelligent, novel, resident, starve, and volunteer. Spelling: This week, students will review the words from the first five weeks of school. Writing: Students will be editing their personal narratives and writing their final drafts. Math: Students will continue to learn their multiplication facts. This week will focus on 0, 1, and 10. We will then review the facts they have learned in Topic 2. Social Studies: Students will research a country from which their families or ancestors have immigrated. They will research the flag, and a famous monument of that country. Science: Students will build pendulums and compare the pendulum to their experience at the Museum of Science & Industry. Reading- This week students will learn about non-fiction text features. They include the following: title, headings, photographs, captions, illustrations, diagrams, graphs, glossary, index, table of contents, bold print, and italic print.
Wordly Wise- Students will begin Lesson 3. The words include the following: ambition, auction, coast, current, frail, intelligent, novel, resident, starve, volunteer. They will take a test on these words next Friday. Spelling- The spelling words of the week are cool, rule, lose, noon, true, move, mood, grew, clue, and scoop. Writing- Students will be editing their personal narratives and begin writing their final drafts. Math- We will begin Topic 2 this week, and students will learn their multiplication math facts. This topic will focus on 2, 5, 9, 0, and 1 facts. Social Studies- Students will finish reading about other children's immigration stories. They will complete a virtual simulation about Ellis Island. Science- Students will learn how pendulums work, and create their own pendulum. General News: Our field trip to the Museum of Science & Industry will be next Wednesday, October 11th. Please make sure your student returns their permission slip and $12 for the field trip! Please let me know if you have any questions.
Reading: Students will be reading "Ooka and the Honest Thief" this week, and will practice sequencing events. Wordly Wise: This Friday, students will take their Lesson 2 Wordly Wise test. Math: Students will focus on division strategies, including sharing equally and division as repeated subtraction. They will complete a Topic 1 review on Thursday, and their Topic 1 test is Friday, October 6th. Writing: Students will continue drafting their personal narrative. They will begin editing their draft to include more detail. Social Science: In class, we will read different accounts of students that have immigrated to the United States. They will identify each student's worries, difficulties, and successes as recent immigrants. Science: Students will discover inertia and its relation to force and gravity. General News: A technology information sheet went home for all students. They need to have it signed by a parent and returned as soon as possible.
Reading: This week, students will be reading "The Fisherman and His Wife." They will work on predicting, and identifying important information in the story. Worldy Wise: Students will learn Lesson 2 words. Spelling: Students will be working on Week 3 words, and they will have a spelling test on Friday, September 29th. Math: Students will take a pre-test for Topic 1, which focuses on multiplication and division. Students will learn the different strategies of multiplication. Social Science: We will be starting a unit on immigration and the "Peopling of the United States." Students will be discussing the various ethnic groups that have made contributions to U.S. culture. Science: Students will conduct an experiment to see how gravity effects objects of different weights. Students will learn Newton's Second Law of Motion. General News: This week we will be taking the fall Reading MAP test on Tuesday, September 19th.
Math: This week, students will continue to subtract 3-digit numbers using regrouping. We will then do a Topic 9 review on Thursday. Topic 9 test will be on Friday, September 22nd. Reading: This week, students will read the story, The Man Whose Trade Was Tricks. They will complete a close read to identify the nouns and verbs in a passage. They will complete a discussion based on a focus question from the story. Wordly Wise: Students will have their Lesson 1 Wordly Wise test on Friday, September 22nd. Writing: Students will begin their narrative based on a small moment in their lives. They will create a story map and comic strip to guide their writing. Social Studies: Students will explore how archaeologists examine artifacts. They will examine an artifact through the lens of different social scientists. Science: Students will explore how gravity works. They will complete a gravity lab on Thursday. General News: Please make sure to have your child bring in their signed Media Consent, Income Form, and Emergency Contact form back to school!
Reading: Students will be setting up their interactive reading notebooks this week that they will reference throughout the school year. They will receive their Junior Great Books, our textbook for reading which focuses on folktales and fantasy stories, and we will read the first story, The Banza. This week, students will focus on questioning and visualizing. Math: Students will review how to add 3-digit numbers. Writing: Students will begin brainstorming ideas for their first narrative, which will focus on a special person, place, or emotion. They will begin to generate topics later in the week. Social Studies: Students will learn the four different kinds of social scientists: an economist, a historian, a political scientist, and a geographer. Science: Students will be introduced to forces, specifically pushing and pulling. |
